What is Radial Shockwave Therapy?

Radial Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy acoustic waves to stimulate healing in injured or painful tissues. It is commonly used for treating chronic musculoskeletal conditions like tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, and calcific shoulder tendinitis. The therapy works by promoting circulation, reducing inflammation, and breaking down adhesions, which helps to alleviate pain and accelerate tissue repair.

At Beaumaris Health Centre, we use a state-of-the- art shockwave unit. Our doctors or therapists will first identify the areas where the shockwaves should be applied. Then a small machine is pressed directly onto the skin while shockwaves are administered. Some discomfort or pain is expected during the treatments but is often short-lived. Treatment often takes only a few minutes.

The common uses for radial shockwave therapy include:

  • Insertion tendinopathy/Tendon problems:
  • Tennis & Golfers Elbow
  • Rotator Cuff Injuries/Tears
  • Heel Spurs & Plantar Fasciitis
  • Patellar Tendonitis
  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Glute/Hip Tendonitis
  • Trigger Finger
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Hypertonic muscle
  • Myofascial syndromes
  • Hematoma treatments

Treatments are often recommended once a week for approximately 3–6 visits. Normalization of tissue and full heal continues for a period of 4–6 weeks after the last treatment is administered.
