CHIROPRACTIC

Chiropractor

Chiropractic, also known as chiropractic care, is a health discipline that seeks to prevent and treat health problems by using spinal adjustments in order to correct misalignments, or subluxations. Chiropractic is a form of natural health care that focuses on treating a patient without the use of drugs or medicines. Chiropractic Care is a safe and non-invasive healing therapy. Chiropractic treatments optimize the nervous system by ensuring the spinal column is properly aligned. Vertebral Subluxations or Misalignments can interfere with the brain’s communication with the rest of your body.

What is a Chiropractor?

A doctor of chiropractic (“D.C.”) practices within a branch of the healing arts concerned with disease processes. Chiropractic care is a recognized form of therapy that focuses on improving your overall health and well-being without the use of drugs or surgery. Chiropractors are required to complete a course of study similar to that of medical doctors. Generally they are required to complete four years of undergraduate study. Once accepted to an accredited chiropractic school/college, in the first two years students receive classroom and laboratory work in anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pathology, biochemistry, and public health. The final two years include hands-on courses in manipulation and spinal adjustments as well as clinical experience that may cover areas such as orthopedics, geriatrics, biomechanics, radiology, neurology, diagnosis, and natural medicine.

Chiropractors are specialists in chiropractic also known as manual adjustment of the vertebrae of the spine and other joints. Chiropractic adjustments helps relieve pain and restore normal functioning to the spine, joints and supporting structures of the body – so you can enjoy your everyday activities. Along with chiropractic adjustments your Chiropractor is also trained to utilize physiotherapy modalities when needed as well as recommend/prescribe therapeutic exercise and other necessary modalities which may be essential for your rehabilitation, prevention strategies and life style modifications.

Our Chiropractor, Dr. Riad Tarrabain, at the Beaumaris Health Centre prides himself on taking the time to work one-on-one with patients to formulate a treatment plan that focuses on achievement of the patient’s goals.

What is a Chiropractic Treatment/Adjustment and how does it work?

When the 24 bones that protect the spinal cord lose their normal position or motion, delicate nerve tissue can become choked or irritated. If a thorough examination reveals malfunctioning areas of the spine, chiropractic adjustments are recommended to help correct this condition.

A chiropractic adjustment is the use of a specific force in a precise direction applied to a joint that is fixated, “locked up”, or not moving properly. Adjustments help return the bones to a more normal position or motion, relieving pain and ill health.

Usually the doctor’s hands or a specially designed instrument delivers a brief and highly accurate thrust. After years of training, each doctor has selected a variety of methods and become skilled in their delivery. Regardless of the technique used, each chiropractic adjustment is tailored to the patient’s age, size, and unique spinal problem.

Adjustments help normalize the spinal function and avoid bone and soft tissue degeneration. When nervous system function improves in this way, the body can begin the natural healing process.

Is chiropractic adjustment safe?

Chiropractic is widely recognized as one of the safest, drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of headache, neck and back pain.

What can I expect on my first visit?

Upon your arrival at our facility, you will be asked to complete the Patient Admission Forms. You will then meet with our chiropractor, Dr. Riad Tarrabain; he will do an initial consultation and will discuss and talk about your medical history and your current medical issues. He will then perform a physical examination and spinal assessment. Your chiropractor will then decide if a treatment can be provided at this time or further testing, such as x-rays are required.

Do I need a Medical Doctor’s referral to seek Chiropractic treatments?

No you do NOT need an MD referral to see a chiropractor. Chiropractors are legislated as primary contact health professionals. This means that patients can consult them directly. However, at the Beaumaris health centre, Dr. Riad Tarrabain works closely with medical doctors, many of whom refer patients to our facility and we frequently refer to them when necessary.
